Planetdance for windows / Paran Analysis
« on: March 20, 2021, 04:18:07 PM »
Hi there - over the weekend I will be releasing my latest module for Planetdance - Paran Analysis. This module provides a comprehensive way of working with the rising, culminating, setting and anti-culminating of planets. The calculations are made using Rob Hand's method, detailed in Essays on Astrology. See the attached screenshots for an early glimpse of the module.

For the tutorial, please see youtube:

From the Help file:

Robert Hand defines 'parans' as:

the 'simultaneous bodily transits of two or more bodies over the horizon or meridian circles at a given place at the same time. However it must be pointed out that paran-related pair of planets does not have to be actually on the angles at a given time to be in paran. They merely have to be potentially capable of transiting the angles at that latitude at some time during the day.' (from Hand (1982) p. 65)

The term 'paran' is an abbreviation of the classical Greek word 'paranatellonta'.

Although the roots of this method are extremely ancient, stretching back to Babylonian observational astronomy, the modern revival of the technique seems to be due to the Western Sidereal astrologer Cyril Fagan. He introduced the modern concept in his 'Primer of Sidereal Astrology'.

Hand lists a variety of potential paran formations:

Parans in conjunction

Simultaneous rising of bodies (two or more bodies crossing the plane of the horizon together)
Simultaneous culminating of bodies (two or more bodies crossing the plane of the upper meridian together)
Simultaneous anti-culminating of bodies (two or more bodies crossing the plane of the lower meridian together)

Parans in opposition

Simultaneous culminating and anti-culminating of bodies
Simultaneous rising and setting of bodies

Parans in square

Simultaneous rising and culminating of bodies
Simultaneous rising and anti-culminating of bodies
Simultaneous setting and culminating of bodies
Simultaneous setting and anti-culminating of bodies

On occasions parans will be formed by planets or stars actually transiting the angles at the time at which the chart is cast. However, as Hand points out, parans are more likely to be formed in potential at the moment of birth, and will have already transited the angles, or will transit the angles in the hours after birth.

It should be noted that paran formation is very sensitive not only to time but to location (especially the latitude of place).

« on: February 09, 2021, 08:48:03 PM »
Hi - the following may be of interest to Mac users. Thanks to Nefgem.

hello everyone, i would like to share here a possibility i use to make planet dance work on mac. which may be of interest to mac users who do not want to emulate a heavy solution.
I did a re-install on H-sierra, but it worked under el capitan.
you will absolutely need to install
1 XQuartz for mac
2 WineBottlerCombo_1.6.1 (or maybe higher)
define a PC / wine / folder
I haven't tried later versions yet
I hope that this will work for you
Thanks to Jean for being able to preserve the possibility of running Planet Dance with Wine.

Classic, Medieval, Vedic / Topic based lots
« on: February 04, 2021, 08:51:50 PM »
Hi there - here is the way to calculate lot positions by topic rather than degree. The example Chart is Beethoven, available in the planetdance database. We will look at the example of the Lot of Jupiter (Victory) in this chart.

The first thing to note is that the signs are always counted in zodiacal direction. The next thing is that you have to count from the topic position of Jupiter to the topic position of daimon for the night chart.

JU = Capricorn/3rd topic
DA = Scorpio/1st topic (the zodiacal position is in Libra, the 12th topic, calculated from degree to degree).

Note that if you count from Jupiter to the zodiacal position of Daimon you aren't comparing topical positions of the lots and planets. Jupiter is in its topic position, but Daimon in this instance (in the 12th) would have been calculated by degree.

If you start at Jupiter and count off the signs in zodiacal order I get 11 to the TOPIC position of Daimon in Scorpio. The topic containing Jupiter is counted as 1. 11 Signs from the horoskopos is of course the 11 topic position = Virgo. So the Lot of Jupiter moves to the 11th topic/Virgo using this system, from Leo, its position calculated by degree.

See attached screenshot to follow the working.

Planetdance for windows / Tyl Chart Synthesis
« on: December 23, 2020, 11:10:47 AM »
Hi there - I'm working on a new module for Planetdance called Tyl Chart Synthesis. This module will recreate the methods of the late, great US astrologer Noel Tyl. Noel developed a clear astrological methodology over his long career and the key features will be incorporated into this module. Tyl published many books and articles in which he explained how working.

For an online summary see:

Click the menu button at the bottom of the page to access more information.

See the screenshot for a view of the early prototype.

Planetdance for windows / Lifetime Directions and Progressions
« on: October 24, 2020, 06:55:17 PM »
There is the new module for Planetdance. You can find it under the Time menu:

Time-Tools: Lifetime Directions and Progressions: module that calculates 100 years of directions or progressions for the solar return date/time for the place of birth.

From the Help File: This module shows a circular presentation of the positions of planets at the time and date of each solar return, in relation to the natal chart, over a period of 100 years from birth. The positions are calculated for the place of birth.

Users can choose to display positions for each year after birth for solar arcs, transits (effectively solar returns), naibod arcs, one-degree arcs, mean solar arcs and secondary progressions.

The positions of each planet are shown by a small circle on the natal chart. Retrograde planets at each are shown with a turquoise highlight. On the righthand side of the screen the date and time of each solar return is listed.

Users can calculate a particular directed or progressed chart by clicking on the list entry of the relevant year and using the Menu button in the main window to choose the item Calculate Return. This will calculate the directed or progressed positions for the place of birth and display the chart in the main Planetdance window. The positions calculated are determined by the choice made by the user.

Users can choose the planetary and angular positions to display in the 100 year view by clicking on the relevant check boxes on the left hand side of the screen. Alongside each checkbox, the planet glyph is displayed along with the sign and degree position in the natal chart.

Options Menu

Users can choose whether or not to show the natal planets, planet position lines and house cusps.

Users can opt to show a 'now circle' which marks the current date. This helps to identify the current solar return. The circle will only be shown if the current date falls within the timespan of the graph. By moving the mouse over the graph, users can identify the date and zodiacal position of points of interest.

Users can also opt for thicker lines in the chart wheel, or to use big symbols.

Different combinations of settings can be saved as .flo files and reloaded as required.

There is also an accompanying video on Jean's youtube channel at

Thanks. Ed
